Improve Your Sexual Literacy Through Masturbation
Want to improve your sexual literacy? I recommend that you improve your sexual literacy through masturbation via sensate-focused techniques, like the step-by-step outlined here in this blog post:
WHAT IS SEXUAL LITERACY?
Sexual literacy is the level of understanding that you have about the different parts of your body and sexuality. This includes anatomy, pleasure, consent, family planning, and the hormones your body produces to maintain your sexual health.
The higher your level of sexual literacy, the more empowered you are to make informed decisions about your body and sexuality. Since sexual literacy is about more than just sex itself, it is important to learn as early as puberty so that you can keep track of your physiology from the time of maturation. If you want to understand your body and sexuality more, you can improve your sexual literacy through masturbation.
HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SEXUAL LITERACY THROUGH MASTURBATION
Masturbation, while often considered a self-indulgent activity focused only on pleasure, can also be a form of mindful self-care that allows exploration of your body’s physiology. While we are big fans of reaching orgasm here, you can also improve your sexual literacy through masturbation.
Sensate focus, developed by Masters and Johnson in the 1960s, is considered “mindfulness for touch”, which is why I love to share this multi-step technique with my clients who have low sexual literacy. Intentional focus on touch, without expectations, is at the core of sensate focus and is the key to teaching yourself about your physiology.
HOW TO CONDUCT SOLO SENSATE-FOCUSED MASTURBATION
In sensate-focused masturbation, you will be focusing on just three things: Temperature, Texture, and Pressure. Focusing on how different areas feel based on how you are touching them is key to improving your sexual literacy and understanding how your body’s physiology is unique to you.
TIMELINE: Do only one phase per session, and leave at least a day to process the experience in between sessions. Aim to spend at least two weeks in each phase. These exercises can be done one to three times per week.
NOTE: Sensate focus should be done separately from usual sexual intimacy, so avoid touch that leads to orgasm until Phase 3.
Phase 1 [10 minutes] Touch, kiss, and stroke anywhere on your body, except your genitals and breasts. Notice how the contact FEELS. Try to stay focused on your physical senses. Stay in your body and out of your mind.
Phase 2 [10 minutes] Same as Phase 1– genitals and breasts can be included this time. Notice how the contact FEELS. Try to stay focused on your physical senses. Stay in your body and out of your mind. Take note of Temperature, Texture, and Pressure as you explore your physiology.
Phase 3 [20 minutes] Same as Phase 2– orgasm can be reached in this phase. Notice how the contact FEELS. Try to stay focused on your physical senses. Stay in your body and out of your mind. Take note of Temperature, Texture, and Pressure as you explore your physiology.
WHAT DO MASTURBATION AND PELVIC FLOOR PHYSICAL THERAPY HAVE TO DO WITH EACH OTHER?
Masturbation for the purposes of sexual literacy is helpful to the pelvic floor physical therapy space because it gives patients an informed and empowered place to start from when discussing their physiology. Knowing how your body has changed over the years is essential to describing to your Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist what struggles and changes you are experiencing.
If you have noticed changes in your sexual function, satisfaction, or physiology, I invite you to book a FREE 20-minute consult with me, Dr. Laura Meihofer, so we can discuss your concerns.
