Pelvic Floor Therapy for Postpartum Care

About Postpartum Recovery

Postpartum recovery refers to the period of time immediately following labor, where your body slowly begins to heal from both months of carrying extra weight and the trauma of childbirth. Regardless of the type of childbirth you experience, your body and pelvic floor will need plenty of care and attention while recovering.

Postpartum recovery begins at day one, and does not magically end even after the many weeks that are considered the “postpartum” period. It can take months and even years for the body to heal—no matter if you delivered vaginally or via c-section.

The good news is that you can begin working with a pelvic floor therapist immediately after delivery in order to help offset your postpartum symptoms, encourage a smoother recovery, and create a healthier pelvic floor. You can also consider getting ahead of the game with pelvic floor therapy during pregnancy, if possible.

Even if you haven’t worked on your pelvic floor during your pregnancy—no worries! It’s never too late to seek treatment for postpartum pelvic floor dysfunction. Regardless of how far along you are in your postpartum journey, Dr. Laura Meihofer can help! She is very experienced in treating postpartum pelvic floor conditions caused by pregnancy and childbirth. She works with patients of all ages and stages of their postpartum journey to provide relief and improved quality of life.

Many people have been suffering for decades, thinking they have to live with dysfunction—because they have been conditioned to think it is “normal” to experience incontinence or other symptoms after childbirth. While these conditions are common, they are not normal. Better pelvic floor health is possible and attainable!

How Pelvic Floor Therapy Can Help

Pelvic floor treatment can relieve a variety of symptoms—lessening your pain, improving pelvic floor function, and bringing normalcy back into your life. With a healthy pelvic floor, you can focus more on caring for your little one, instead of worrying about incontinence or struggling with pain.

Your treatment will start with a pelvic floor exam to identify your needs and the health of your pelvic floor. After an exam, Dr. Meihofer will create a pelvic floor therapy treatment plan to address immediate issues and help prevent long-term conditions. This treatment will include tasks to strengthen your pelvic floor, release tight muscles, and decrease pain—so you can live comfortably and confidently. She can also address other pregnancy-related conditions, such as diastasis recti.

Additionally, Dr. Meihofer can help suggest behavioral modifications during your treatment, such as appropriate lifting posture and safer exercise activities during your postpartum recovery. She is not only skilled in treating symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, but is also passionate about providing you with the knowledge and tools you need for success. She will answer your questions, provide instruction for at-home care, and suggest useful postpartum products to support your healing journey (v-slings, bras, body wraps, and more).
