Bowel Evacuation Disorders

Pelvic Floor Therapy for Bowel Evacuation Disorders

About Bowel Evacuation Disorders

Bowel evacuation conditions are much more common than you may think, and often involve a range of symptoms—not just constipation! Incomplete bowel movements, painful bowel movements, incontinence, and much more can be experienced with a bowel evacuation disorder.

These types of disorders involve incoordination of pelvic floor muscles. Your pelvic floor is made up of 26 muscles that allow control of your bowels, bladder, sexual function, and much more. At any age, some of those muscles may be too tight or weak—making it difficult to have a successful or regular bowel movement. While this may sound like a simple issue, it can actually present itself in many different forms, such as the following:

  • Anismus
  • Chronic Constipation (CC)
  • Enterocele
  • Pelvic Floor Dyssynergia
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse
  • Rectocele
  • And more

While pelvic floor dysfunction is common, it is not normal. It is also not something that will go away on its own. Luckily, you can relieve your symptoms and find a better quality of life with the help of an expert!

How Pelvic Floor Therapy Can Help

Dr. Laura Meihofer’s treatment for bowel evacuation disorders focuses on helping patients understand the source of their condition and regain control of their pelvic floor muscles.

To do this, Dr. Meihofer may utilize a biofeedback device. An electronic biofeedback device allows a pelvic floor therapist to monitor your pelvic floor muscles internally with painless sensors, while testing new behaviors. This will help you understand how your pelvic floor muscles contract and relax, improving your understanding of what these motions feel like and thereby increasing your level of pelvic floor control with practice.

“Practice” refers to techniques that teach patients how to relax or strengthen their pelvic floor muscles which, as mentioned before, control your bowel functions. Once you have a better understanding and better control over your muscles, you will be able to see improvements in the restroom.

Other forms of treatment can include breathing exercises, manual therapy, behavioral modifications, and much more—as Dr. Meihofer always takes a very holistic approach to treatment. Additionally, your plan of care will always be curated around your unique, individual needs.

When your bowel evacuation treatment ends, Dr. Laura Meihofer provides you with the tools to continue your pelvic health journey with a customized at-home program. With dedication and consistency, you will continue to see progress!

Similar bowel evacuation treatments have waiting lists that are months long. No need to worry, Dr. Laura Meihofer is actively accepting new patients for immediate treatment!
