What Happens to My Body During Menopause?

You may be asking ‘What happens to my body during menopause?’ and you’re not alone. “The Change.” All women know about it, all women dread it. At least until recently. Menopause has been considered a time in life shrouded in secrecy, negativity and misconception. Women have been expected to simply cope with their body’s unpleasant changes and fluctuations, however, medical professionals and a slew of companies are coming to the rescue with information and products to alleviate those pesky symptoms.


Menopause marks the end of your reproductive years. It begins officially when you haven’t had a period in 12 months. Your body has stopped producing eggs and hormone production of estrogen and progesterone drops. The drop in hormones contributes to many common menopause symptoms.

  • Change in Sleep Pattern
  • Mood Changes
  • Vaginal Dryness
  • Dry Scalp and Hair Loss
  • Low Libido
  • Brain Fog and Memory Loss

Did you know your risk of osteoporosis increases during menopause due to the decrease in estrogen production? Research supports that regular activity such as walking or weight lifting is protective to your bones and can decrease your risk of osteoporosis. Did you also know urinary incontinence often attributed to menopause can actually be the result of poorly coordinated pelvic floor muscles or vulvar skin that has lost some of it’s extensibility? As a pelvic floor physical therapist, I create customized exercise programs that target these weak areas. With consistency and follow through, patients typically see great improvement in 8 to 12 weeks.
